Library's copy lacks plates L, DD, GG, HH, II. Plate OO is bound in at p. 171 instead of 371
Binding: later calf, incorporating portions of earlier binding on boards and spine. Central panel of double fillets in gilt on boards, within floral roll and with corner ornaments. double fillets in gilt along edges of boards. Gold tooled spine, the title now reading: COMMENTARI / DI GIULIO / CESARE. The edges sprinkled red
Label of Ulrich Middeldorf at foot of front pastedown and front free endpaper verso. Front free endpaper and first 2 leaves of text torn at upper corner, apparently to eliminate old signatures. Occasional annotations in brown ink. Two excerpts from dealers' catalog descriptions inserted
T.p. date of M.D.CXVIII (1618) apparently a misprint for M.D.XCVIII (1598), as colophon date is 1598 (p. 407); see Mortimer
First published: Venice : Pietro de' Franceschi, 1575
Translation by F. Baldelli
Illustrations: 42 double-page plates tipped onto stubs at the centerfold, comprising maps of France and Spain and 40 views of battles, camps, etc. They are after Palladio and his sons Orazio and Leonida. All have letterpress explanations on the versos, which for the views are keyed to letters on the plates. Except for the 2 maps they are sequenced by letters on the verso and in the plate at upper left-hand corner: [star on verso, cross on view], A1, A2, B-PP. Starting with A2 they bear the number of the page opposite which they were to be bound. Printer's device on t.p. Initials
Includes indexes
